The drink has a contested origin. One story of origin places (TT) is a drink from Stockholm, most commonly found in the northern parts of Stockholm and the suburban Västerort. The drink was created after experiments by Brandon and Ben. After they ran out of gin for Gin and Tonic they still had Tequila left so they decided to make a new drink.
Without knowing the popularity of the drink in Stockholm, Americans Keith, Jay, and Bram ordered "T&T"'s after they were displeased with their original experimentation of Jack Daniels and tonics (JD&Ts). This experimentation began when a waiter mistook an order for a "gin and tonic" as an order for a "jack and tonic."
The highball appeared in the finale of the first season of the American dramatic television series Lost, when character Ana Lucia Cortez orders a tequila and tonic, with lemon.[1]
